[Blog] Why We Need to Be Patient
Written by superblueflude on Wednesday, 17th Mar 2010 09:03

So what a busy few days we've had, two wins and one loss, suddenly our season went from hopeful relaxation to "Oh my god we still aren't safe".

What I'm finding disturbing are the constant calls for Keane's sacking immediately after every draw or loss, These are my reasons why I feel patience is needed and win, draw or lose we need to get behind everyone including Keane.

Firstly team selection, yes, last night had us asking whether David Wright was injured and why was the side changed. Well, for me, I can understand why Wright was dropped, he might not have been injured however David has been honest and explained that through the season he has carried problems with his ankle.

And also, I may be wrong, but wasn't everyone saying what a fantastic player Rosenior was, so in my book swapping David for a fully fit and good cover like Rosenior is a wise move?

Then comes the Garvan substitution, I've read people saying that Keane embarrassed Garvan, I think not, the pitch was not set up for someone like Garvan, his game is pass, move, pass, create opportunities. It needed something different and Keane saw this. I really wouldn't have to like to think of the score last night had Garvan carried on, not saying he's bad, he's been our creative star, but last night his game was not needed.

Lee Martin, boy this guy frustrates me, but he does have promise, we just need to see it which until now we haven't, but the situation with Damien Delaney earlier in the season springs to mind. Myself included couldn't believe how bad he was at the start of the season but put atamong centre-half and he's been amongst the best I feel.

With Martin, maybe it's finding his best position, maybe he's a player like Murphy, should be up top instead, but then having those two together wouldn't work? Maybe not ,who knows, but for me I'll give him time as he is a Town player and I can see his strengths it's just getting Martin to show them.

But I could go on about players all day, one thing that has made me think is the comments made by Supple when he left. He's stated that some senior players didn't want promotion as this would probably mean the end of their Town careers.

If this is true, then surely Keane may still have some of those players within his squad. Imagine the effect these must have within the dressing room and in training.

Supple's comments show me one thing, that behind the scenes things at Portman Road haven't been as good as they can be. So maybe we have not had a great season, but could Keane possibly be doing something that someone else might have struggled with in keeping Town up?

I bet none of us ever thought of this, but the reason behind my thinking is that if we hadn't changed the manager, maybe the players in question would have still been playing week in week out, and where could we have been? Just a thought.

Finally can I ask why this optimism on Alan Curbishley, who has been spotted at a couple of recent games. Looking at previous spells in management, this is the guy that most West Ham fans blame for their money problems, do we really want that, when according to some, Keane does the same?

Anyway hope you can agree with some of my thoughts, come Saturday lets get three points and get a bit of space between us and the rest.

personally given the number of draws this season, i'd have taken 2 wins and a loss all season - we'd certainly be in a better position. we've become quite difficult to beat, but also easy to stop winning. if in the 17 draws we'd won 8 and lost 9 we'd have amassed 7 points more!

the team were poor last night, but it was better than 3 draws.

Largely agree. Think sacking RK before we are safe is risky, given the loyalty shown to him by the players (especially the ex Sunderland contingent)...but it's hard to see this season as anything other than an epic fail, so maybe we could see a new manager in the summer.

Re Curbishley, disagree if you look at his time at Charlton he took a club with no ground and tiny crowds to being an established premiership club. People should respect this as a massive achievement.

Superblueflude - as a known "positive" poster some may dismiss your blog as more "give Roy a chance" glass half full rambling. Once again, I find myself agreeing with much of what you say but last night it would seem that RK made some baffling choices. If, as you say, Garvan's game was "not needed" last night (poor playing surface and robust opponents etc) why was he picked in the first place? If D Wright was carrying a knock, why was this not made clear post match? Surely Roy knew that this was one of the burning questions fans would have after he changed a winning team? If the game required a bit of strength to take a hold of the midfield, then replacing Garvan with the ultra lightweight and consistently ineffectual Lee Martin just seemed suicidal. I will continue to support Keane, he is manager of my team and I like to believe that in it's own small way my support helps the players on the pitch. However, I hope this season has been a very steep learning curve for him as at times he is tactically left wanting. Good, however, to see views put forward rationally without a mantra of Keane IN or Keane OUT.

A very good blog and certainly better than much of the drivel that is generally wriiten by posters on this site.

I certainly agree that calling for Roy Keane's head after every draw or loss has become common practice on the message board - however I think the majority of the fans that go to the games are a bit more realistic than some of the keyboard warriors that turn up on here.

I agree about the Wright /Rosenior thing as well - if Keane plays Wright then people call for Rosenior and if he plays Rosenior then they call for Wright to be in the team !!In my opinion Wright is a good, steady pro that would be a good addition to any Championship Team, however I think that Rosenior has that extra bit of quality especially going forward but at this moment still lacks a bit of maturity in defense. Therefore I support RK's choice to pick whichever one he feels is right for the game ahead.

With regards to Martin - I think that he has had an awful season and this is mainly down to confidence. He is part of a team performing poorly as a whole this season and has not coped well. However, there must be something about him for Bristol City to look to buy him in the summer and also for Man U to hold on to him for as long as they did. He like much of the team just need to get this season out of the way and start afresh next season.

Finally, if Curbishley is that good - why has he not taken/got any of these jobs that he is continually linked with - surely most would prefer him to Dowie ???

While people say that Keane isnt right for town, doesnt do things the "ipswich way" etc, I thought that the "ipswich way" was to give managers time, time to build a strong squad. Obviously it would be a disaster of a season if we are still near the drop come the end of the season. But I would give him another year.

Thats what I thought about the Garvan situation, I thought that the pitch might have had an impact on his substitution. Being subbed in the first half though is an insult unless there is an injury. I think you are right we should at least give Keano another season. In my opinion Keano's man managment skills are awesome (just look at the effort the players gave after half time). He will oust out all of the time wasters and bring in a squad that wants to achieve. But I firmly believe he will get us promoted and all the boo boys will eat humble pie! (Either that or claim they were always in favour of Keano!) Personally I can't wait to see that! Real football fans get behind their team no matter what. Enough said.
